In late March, Consul Cunanan paid a courtesy call on Minister Goga Khachidze at the Ministry of Environment Protection (MEP). Present at the meeting was Deputy Minister George Zedginidze.

Consul Cunanan and Minister Khachidze discussed ways to help the MEP expand its coordination with its counterpart in the Philippines, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Deputy Minister Zedginidze, who had just attended a conference in the Philippines, voiced his optimism at the possible avenues and areas of cooperation between the two government agencies. In this regard, Minister Khachidze proposed a Memorandum of Understanding between the MEP and DENR that would establish a framework and platform for future collaboration, including visits of delegations and working groups, joint development projects, regular communication and correspondences, and exchanges of relevant research and position papers.

Consul Cunanan liaised with the Office of DENR Secretary Ramon Paje for the latter’s participation in ―Tbilisi+35”, an Intergovernmental Conference on Environmental Education for Sustainable Development, to be held in the Georgian capital on September 6 – 7, 2012.
