Greater Philippines – Georgia Biodiversity Cooperation Pushed

P1920951The Consulate of Georgia in the Philippines, led by Consul (a.h.) Thelmo Cunanan Jr, is pushing for greater cooperation and partnership between the Philippines and Georgia in the area of biodiversity.

In early February, Consul Cunanan met with officials of the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB). These included Dr. Vincent Hilomen, Executive Director for Priority Programs; Ms. Armida Andres, Chief of the Planning Staff; and Ms. Josefina de Leon, Head of the Conservation and Rescue Center Program. Consul Cunanan has previously held talks with BMB Director Theresa Mundita S. Lim.

During the meeting, Consul Cunanan and the assembled BMB officials discussed areas of possible collaboration and partnership. These include a friendship and cooperation agreement between the BMB and its counterpart in Georgia, the Agency for Protected Areas (APA); a “sister-park” relationship between protected areas in the Philippines and Georgia; and marine research collaboration in the Black Sea.

A friendship and cooperation agreement between the two agencies would include a commitment to environment protection, collaboration and promotion of eco-tourism, exchange of communications and research, training, and organization of visiting observer delegations.

The two countries stand to benefit greatly from this partnership. Philippines is an archipelago of 7,100 islands and has been recognized as one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world. BMB authorities can share this valuable experience with Georgia. The APA, on the other hand, is recognized for, among others, its successful management and implementation of sustainable eco-tourism in its protected areas.

Consul Cunanan has been working with officials of the APA, who are eager to begin exchanges.
