zoo1The Consulate of Georgia in the Philippines, led by Consul (a.h.) Thelmo Cunanan Jr., is working with Philippine authorities to facilitate wildlife donations to Tbilisi Zoo, the premiere facility of its kind in Georgia, located in the country’s capital city. He is closely coordinating this endeavour with the offices of Tbilisi Mayor David Narmania and Zoo Director Zurab Gurielidze. The management of the Tbilisi Zoo is under the supervision of city hall.

The Tbilisi Zoo was opened in 1927 and is home to over 300 animals, including elephants, zebras, greater kudu, and elands, and antelopes. ). There are also a number of carnivores in its collection like the lion, tiger and jaguar, and some primate species like the gibbon. The zoo is open year-round and has a small amusement park on its grounds.  Aside from the animal attractions, the zoo also conducts various conservation and environment programs to educate Georgians on wildlife management and protection. The facility works closely with many educational institutions to promote this awareness around the country. It also has an active volunteer program for people who wish to contribute their time and resources to the development of the zoo and the care for its animals.

At the moment, a list of Philippine animals for donation to the Tbilisi Zoo is being prepared. These may include reptiles, raptors, and tigers. Aside from the wildlife donation, Consul Cunanan is also working on a possible “sister-zoo” relationship between the Tbilisi Zoo and its counterpart in the Philippines, the Manila Zoo, and cooperation and partnership with the Biodiversity Management Bureau of the Philippines for research and study of tropical animals.
