On December 4, Consul (a.h.) Thelmo Cunanan Jr. visited the Lomtagora Agro-Industrial Estate, just outside Tbilisi. His objective is to develop and strengthen Georgian – Philippine agriculture technology ties.
Consul Cunanan met with scientists and officials of Lomtagora, who have reportedly developed a species of corn that is immune from tropical disease and promises up to three times more yield than what is currently in the market. During the visit, Consul Cunanan, who was accompanied by Levan Akhvlediani, co-Chairman of the Philippines – Georgia Business and Friendship Association Inc., toured the company’s different facilities. He was also given a briefing by the estate’s lead scientist on the hybrid corn species. Unlike those developed in the West, Lomtagora’s corn is all natural and not genetically-modified.
Consul Cunanan will accompany Philippine agriculture experts and scientists and corn industry officials to Georgian in May to attend a symposium on corn and wheat at Lomtagora. He is exploring the possibility of introducing this hybrid corn species to the Philippine market.
