On October 27, Mr. Norman Camungol was appointed President of the Philippines – Georgia Business and Friendship Association, Inc (PGFA). The latter is a non-stock, non-profit organization, duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of the Republic of the Philippines. Making the announcement, in behalf of the board of directors and board of advisers, were the organization’s co-Chairmen, Consul (a.h.) of Georgia in the Philippines Thelmo Cunanan Jr. and Mr. Levan Akhvlediani, President of the Sports Development Fund of Georgia.
Consul Cunanan and Mr. Akhveldiani founded the PGBFA in 2003.
For eight years until the establishment of the Consulate of Georgia in the Philippines, the PGBFA, under then Executive Director Thelmo Cunanan’s leadership, acted as the de facto representative of Georgia’s interests in the Philippines and carried out numerous activities to promote Georgian interests in the country. The PGBFA and Executive Director Cunanan often received visiting Georgian officials and dignitaries, such as then Senator (and later Ambassador to Italy) Konstantine Gabashvili, head of the Georgian Senate’s foreign relations committee, and various media and business groups.
The promotion of trade and Philippine manufacturing in Georgia is one of the priority economic objectives of Consul Cunanan. With Mr. Camungol’s appointment, the initiatives are expected to be strengthened further. Mr. Camungol, who is also the President of the Production and Operations Management Association of the Philippines, Inc. and Vice President and COO of Automations & Systems Resources, Inc., has committed his organization’s full support. PROMAP’s members have expressed keen interest to explore possibilities in Georgia, specifically as a base of manufacturing for the local market of 5 million people and the greater market of the Caucasus region and southern Russia. Consul Cunanan has signed an MOU with PROMAP for cooperation and partnership in promoting Philippines – Georgian business links.
Mr. Camungol has been active in strengthening ties to Georgia and was the prime mover behind, among others, the Georgian Consulate’s humanitarian assistance to the town of Palompon, Leyte, which was devastated late last year by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).
