Consul Cunanan delivers speech on Georgia and Careers in Foreign Affairs and International Relations

Slide07On September 27, Consul Cunanan was the guest speaker of the De La Salle University for their seminar for graduating students of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management. The talk was held at the CTHM main hall at the DLSU campus in Dasmarinas, Cavite. Foreign Affairs and International Relations is a core subject of the CHTM.

Entitled “An Introduction to Georgia and Careers in Foreign Affairs/International Relations”, the speech began with a basic introduction to Georgia for the assembled group of graduating students. Consul Cunanan then explained the role of honorary consuls, the nature of the job and its duties and responsibilities, and why such officials are sometimes appointed by a country. He also enumerated his many activities, ranging from his assistance to Georgian nationals and protecting and promoting the interests of Georgia in the Philippines to his many socio-economic and cultural endeavours to bring the two countries closer together.

Consul Cunanan also explained to the students the different ways they could begin a career in foreign affairs and international relations, such as joining the Department of Foreign Affairs as a career Foreign Service Officer or Foreign Service Staff Officer. He also talked to them about the kind of duties and responsibilities they could expect as diplomats and realities of life overseas.

Aside from being an Honorary Consul and long-time host of “Coast to Coast”, an NBN/PTV4 television show on foreign affairs and international relations, Consul Cunanan lived in Phnom Penh for many years where he worked as the Executive Assistant of his late father, Lieutenant General Thelmo Y. Cunanan, who was then Philippine Ambassador in Cambodia and instrumental in efforts to usher the country into ASEAN.Slide08
