On December 8, 2013, Consul Cunanan visited the South African Embassy in Manila and met with Ambassador Agnes Nyamande-Pitso. In behalf of the Government of Georgia and the Honorary Consulate of Georgia in the Philippines, he extended his deepest condolences to Ambassador Nyamande-Pitso over the passing of former President Nelson Mandela, who died on December 5, 2013.

In 2002, Consul Cunanan, as a young journalist, had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Mandela at the latter’s home in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa.  In his meeting with Ambassador Nyamande-Pitso, Consul Cunanan talked about how Mr. Mandela, a pro-democracy icon, served as an example and inspiration to people around the world who struggled for freedom and independence. Consul Cunanan later signed the official memorial book in the embassy.
